Particle Acceleration and Parallel Electric Field in Shock Waves

چکیده
The electric field parallel to the magnetic field, E∥, in nonlinear magnetosonic waves is analytically studied. The theory shows that E∥ can be strong. Then, with use of one-dimensional, fully kinetic, relativistic, electromagnetic, particle simulations and with test particle calculations, the effect of E∥ on particle acceleration in shock waves is examined for three different mechanisms: incessant acceleration of relativistic ions, acceleration of trapped electrons, and positron acceleration along the magnetic field.

Cosmic ray acceleration at parallel relativistic shocks in the presence of finite-amplitude magnetic field perturbations
We study the first-order Fermi acceleration process at parallel shock waves by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A ’realistic’ model of the magnetic field turbulence is applied involving sinusoidal waves imposed on the background mean field parallel to the shock normal. The finite-amplitude magnetic field perturbations lead to locally oblique field configurations at the shock and the respective...
متن کاملElectron Acceleration at a Low-mach-number Perpendicular Collisionless Shock
A full particle simulation study is carried out on the electron acceleration at a collisionless, relatively low Alfven Mach number (MA = 5), perpendicular shock. Recent self-consistent hybrid shock simulations have demonstrated that the shock front of perpendicular shocks has a dynamic rippled character along the shock surface of low-Mach-number perpendicular shocks. In this paper, the effect o...
متن کاملElectron Shock Surfing Acceleration in Multidimensions: Two-dimensional Particle-In-Cell Simulation of Collisionless Perpendicular Shock
Electron acceleration mechanism at high Mach number collisionless shocks propagating in a weakly magnetized medium is investigated by a self-consistent two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. Simulation results show that strong electrostatic waves are excited via the electron-ion electrostatic two-stream instability at the leading edge of the shock transition region as in the case of earli...
متن کاملCosmic-ray Acceleration at Ultrarelativistic Shock Waves: Effects of a “realistic” Magnetic Field Structure
First-order Fermi acceleration processes at ultrarelativistic (γ ∼ 5−30) shock waves are studied with the method of Monte Carlo simulations. The accelerated particle spectra are derived by integrating the exact particle trajectories in a turbulent magnetic field near the shock. The magnetic field model upstream of the shock assumes finite-amplitude perturbations within a wide wavevector range a...
متن کاملParticle Acceleration and Magnetic Field Generation in Electron - Positron Relativistic Shocks
Shock acceleration is an ubiquitous phenomenon in astrophysical plasmas. Plasma waves and their associated instabilities (e.g., Buneman, Weibel and other two-stream instabilities) created in collisionless shocks are responsible for particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration. Using a 3-D relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) code, we have investigated particle acceleration associ...
